“Tonight’s the Night.” Neil Young. Reprise. Fans of Young’s more soothing and carefully honed “After the Gold Rush” approach were stunned in 1975 by the raw, jarring nature of this sometimes brilliant, sometimes embarrassingly ragged work. Placed in the context of the many twists and turns in Young’s independent rock career, the music here no longer seems so extreme. However, it remains a compelling example of Young pushing himself to the emotional edge, spurred by the drug-related deaths of two friends. Like John Lennon’s first solo album, “Tonight’s the Night” is a fascinating glimpse of an artist’s disillusionment and pain. CD sound: average. ****
