The government announced a new Federal Aviation Administration regulation designed to reduce chances of catastrophic fires on large passenger airliners. Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole said airlines will be required to carry protective breathing equipment for flight attendants to fight fires. The rule also spells out performance standards for the equipment and requires that attendants be trained in fighting fires while wearing the equipment.
