Ground Broken for USC-Staffed 283-Bed Specialty Care Hospital

Officials of the USC School of Medicine and National Medical Enterprises Inc. broke ground Wednesday on a 283-bed specialty care hospital not far from the landmark County-USC Medical Center.

The teaching hospital, managed by NME and staffed by USC faculty, is to be part of a medical complex that will also include an ambulatory care center, a hotel for patients and guests and a parking structure.

The complex will be known as the Richard K. Eamer Medical Plaza, named for NME’s chairman and chief executive officer, who is also a USC alumnus.

The new hospital, expected to cost $105 million to construct, is scheduled for completion in 1990. It will make use of high technology to provide care for private patients.

Officials at nearby White Memorial Medical Center opposed the new hospital’s construction, saying it is unneeded because existing facilities have been experiencing light patient loads.

The hospital will go up on land once owned by Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles Unified School District. In order to secure the county land, USC and NME agreed to continue providing medical staff for the existing medical center once the new facility is completed.
