Lt. Gen. Forrest S. McCartney, director of the Kennedy Space Center, will retire from the Air Force on Sept. 1 and will seek, as a civilian, to keep his job, officials said Wednesday.

Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger said in Washington that he is recommending that McCartney be retired in his present rank after 34 years of service.

McCartney “has expressed a desire to stay on as director of the Kennedy Space Center” and will apply for the job as a permanent career position, National Aeronautics and Space Administration spokesman Hugh Harris said.
