Palms : Palms Junior High Honored
Palms Junior High School has been honored by the U. S. Department of Education as one of 271 outstanding junior high schools, middle schools and high schools in the nation.
The schools were judged on academics, general climate and morale on campus and community involvement, with a special emphasis on the teaching of the Constitution and drug- and alcohol-related problems, according to Cynthia Myers, Palms’ English department chairwoman.
Assistant Principal Tom Moulton said the honor “was really a pleasant surprise. We think we deserve it . . . we have an outstanding school.”
Myers, who coordinated the writing of the 25-page application for the award last December, said one of the outstanding characteristics of the school is its ethnic diversity--the 1,200 student population is about one-third black, one third-Latino, a little less than a third white and about 5% Asian.
“It’s an example of integration working in the school system,” she said. “This school is as wonderful as the award says it is.”
