Chris Perry, the son of former major league pitcher Jim Perry, shot a five-under-par 66 Friday to take the second-round lead in the $700,000 Kemper Open golf tournament at Potomac, Md.

The round was suspended due to darkness with 48 players still on the course. Because play was stopped by rain Thursday, half the 156-man field had to complete the first round before the second 18 holes could start.

The second round was scheduled to be completed this morning.

Perry, whose previous best finish was a tie for 10th place last October in the Walt Disney tournament, was at 10-under-par 132 after 36 holes.

That score put him one stroke ahead of Howard Twitty, who shot a 67 for a 133. Keith Clearwater shot a 66 and was at 134, and George Burns, who shot a 67, was at 136.

Perry had five birdies and an eagle and just missed a hole-in-one when his tee shot on the 136-yard 11th hole lipped the cup.

First-round leaders Greg Norman of Australia and Tom Kite were still on the course when play was called. Norman was five under par after 35 holes, and Kite was nine under par after 33.

Bruce Crampton, seeking his second straight victory, shot a tournament-record, eight-under-par 64 to take a three-stroke lead over Chi Chi Rodriguez and John Brodie in the opening round of the Senior Players Reunion Pro-Am at Dallas.

Crampton’s round included an eagle at the par-5 fifth hole and a 30-foot chip-in for a birdie at the par-3 eighth.

Rafe Botts and Harold Henning were at 68.

South African Mark McNulty and Englishman Mark James both equaled the course record of 65, but Welshman Ian Woosnam, who shot a 68, held a one-stroke lead at 135 halfway through the $320,000 British Masters at Woburn, England.

McNulty was tied for second, and James was another stroke back at 137.

While tournament favorite Bernhard Langer shot a 69 to stay four shots off the lead, it was a disastrous day for Craig Stadler, who failed to make the cut. Stadler had an 80 for a 148 total.

Cathy Morse retained a one-shot lead in the $500,000 LPGA McDonald’s tournament at Wilmington, Del., with a second-round 70. Morse was at six-under-par 136 for 36 holes.

Sherri Steinhauer shot a 69 for a 137 total, while Sherri Turner was at 138 after a 71.
