Tommy John pitched a six-hitter through seven innings, and Rick Cerone and Dave Winfield both hit home runs Friday night to lead the New York Yankees past Milwaukee, 13-1, ending the Brewers’ six-game winning streak.

The victory at Milwaukee came without injured stars Don Mattingly and Rickey Henderson, and kept the Yankees 1 1/2 games ahead of Toronto in the American League East.

Earlier, Mattingly was sent back to New York to have a sore back examined, and Henderson was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore hamstring.

“I threw fastballs and curveballs,” said John, who struck out two and did not walk a batter in winning his fourth straight. “The majority of my pitches tonight were probably 83 to 86 m.p.h. It’s not 90, obviously, but it’s not junk.”

Winfield drove in three runs with his 12th homer and two doubles, and Cerone and Willie Randolph had two RBIs each in a 15-hit attack. Cerone began a five-run fourth with his first homer and then had a single and a run-scoring sacrifice fly in a six-run fifth.

Milwaukee starter Juan Nieves (4-3) left in the fourth when he was hit on the right knee by Ron Kittle’s line drive. X-rays were negative, and the injury was diagnosed as a bruise on the inside of the knee.

Nieves gave up 5 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings. The Yankees pounded reliever John Henry Johnson for 7 runs on 7 hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Winfield hit an RBI double in the first and homered to lead off the seventh for the Yankees’ final run.

Texas 15, Minnesota 9--Pete O’Brien hit two home runs, including his first career grand slam, and tied a club record with seven RBIs at Minneapolis to lead the Rangers past the Twins, extending Minnesota’s losing streak to three games.

Texas, which had 20 hits in a 14-3 victory over Chicago Wednesday, had 17 hits and 10 walks off four Minnesota pitchers.

O’Brien hit a 3-0 pitch to right-center field off reliever Mark Portugal for his grand slam in the sixth inning, giving Texas an 11-1 lead. It was his 13th home run of the season. He added a two-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the third.

Steve Buechele also hit a solo home run, had two doubles and scored three runs for Texas. Ruben Sierra knocked in two runs with two hits and scored four runs, and Oddibe McDowell drove in two runs with a solo homer and a single.

Pete Incaviglia’s two-run double highlighted a four-run seventh for Texas.

Toronto 6, Baltimore 2--Jimmy Key pitched a five-hitter, and George Bell, Cecil Fielder and Jesse Barfield all homered at Toronto in the Blue Jays’ win over the Orioles.

Key (7-3) struck out 6 and walked 3 for his third complete game and the Blue Jays’ third straight win.

The Blue Jays scored four runs in the third inning, when they sent nine batters to the plate.

With the game tied, 1-1, Barfield led off with an infield single, and Geroge Bell followed with his 18th homer, a shot to left field that increased his league-leading RBI total to 46.

Fielder followed with his fifth homer of the season. Barfield made it 6-1 in the sixth with his 13th homer of the year.

Detroit 4, Boston 2--Pat Sheridan hit a homer to lead off the seventh inning; Alan Trammell extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and rookie Jeff Robinson threw a five-hitter for 7 innings at Boston to lead the Tigers. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak by the Red Sox.

Sheridan, who had struck out in his two previous at-bats, broke a 2-2 tie by hitting Al Nipper’s 2-1 pitch just inside the right-field foul pole. It was Sheridan’s third home run of the season.

Robinson (4-2) allowed both Boston runs and improved his record in his last four starts to 3-0. Eric King, the fourth Detroit pitcher, worked the ninth for his third save.

Nipper, 4-5 overall but 1-5 in his last six decisions, retired the first 12 batters he faced. Then Alan Trammell opened the fifth with a double, took third on a ground-out and scored on Darrell Evans’ two-out double. Chet Lemon singled home Evans, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Seattle 7, Kansas City 2--Lee Guetterman pitched a seven-hitter though seven innings, and Mickey Brantley drove in four runs with a homer and a single at Seattle as the Mariners snapped a three-game losing streak.
