Three top Peruvian police generals have resigned after an illegal strike for higher pay by officers last month, the Interior Ministry said Saturday. A statement said those who resigned were the overall commander of the country’s three police forces and the commanders of two of them, the Civil Guard and Republican Guard.

Police sources said the government had criticized the generals for failing to control rank-and-file policemen who launched the strike, which involved most of Lima’s 25,000-member Civil Guard. They said more than 300 junior officers from police stations in Lima and the provinces had also been dismissed.
