The World

East German leader Erich Honecker has agreed to make an unprecedented visit to West Germany but has not set a date, the state-run East German news agency ADN quoted him as saying. It would be the first visit by any East German Communist Party chief to West Germany. Honecker, who came to power in East Germany in 1971, has had a standing invitation to visit West Germany. The trip has been planned several times, but it invariably was canceled when relations between East Germany and West Germany cooled or when the Soviet Union pressured East Germany.
