Malaysia Halves Death Rate of Mothers, Babies

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia —
Deaths among babies under 1 year old and mothers in Malaysia was cut in half from 1975 to 1985 due to improved health services, the country’s top doctor said.
Director-General of Health Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Sahan told a health seminar last week that the infant mortality rate had fallen to 16.95 per 1,000 live births from 33.2 in 1975 and the maternal mortality rate had dropped to 0.37 per 1,000 from 0.83.
