LEADING CALIFORNIA COMPANIES 1987 : A ROSTER OF THE STATE’S LARGEST INDUSTRIAL, FINANCIAL, MERCHANDISING, TRANSPORTATION AND UTITLITY FIRMS : ALPHABETICAL INDEX

Share
Compilation and analysis for the 1987 roster were provided by Maureen Perry and Cynthia Sosin of the Los Angeles Times marketing research department

Leading California companies are listed in the 1987 Roster in the following categories: industrials; financial institutions, including banks, savings and loans and holding companies; merchandising firms; transportation firms; insurance, including life and fire and casualty; and utility corporations. A 1987 rank and a rank for the previous year 1986 are given numerically for each industrial company. Others categories have a letter preceding the ranking: A holding company would show H-6 to indicate a rank of 6 within that category; see Code below for further identifications. The list also shows the page on which the company appears.

To be included in The Times roster, companies must have their principal headquarters in California and, with the exception of certain financial institutions, their stock must be publicly held. Limited partnerships with publicly traded stock are included. The requirements eliminate many companies in the state generating billions of dollars in sales and profits, because their head offices are located outside California or because they are privately owned.
