The Aid & Comfort benefit Monday for Bay Area AIDS groups--which featured such stars as Linda Ronstadt, Joel Grey, Boz Scaggs and Shirley MacLaine--raised more than $500,000, according to benefit co-sponsor Vince Calcagno. The $250-a-plate bash drew 1,040 people and featured an eight-course meal prepared by 14 top San Francisco Bay-area chefs and served by 350 volunteer waiters. “I hope people can keep in mind we’re doing this for a reason, and not just to have the best night of the decade,” said Calcagno, who came up with the idea after five friends died of AIDS in one month.
