El Cajon
An El Cajon electrician who claimed that taxes are unconstitutional was convicted in San Diego Municipal Court on Tuesday for failing to file state income tax returns.
James J. Wood, 41, was convicted by a jury of failing to pay 1982-83 state taxes on $95,000 in income. He had argued that the Constitution didn’t require him to pay taxes, according to a spokesman for the state Franchise Tax Board.
Wood, who is scheduled to be sentenced June 30, faces a maximum of two years in prison and $10,000 in fines, in addition to an estimated $5,000 in tax penalties and interest.
