Britain Expels 2 Iranian Envoys
Britain today ordered Iran to withdraw two of its 18 diplomats from London, deepening a two-week crisis in relations between the two countries.
The move was the latest in a dispute that began after British diplomat Edward Chaplin was beaten, abducted and held for 24 hours by revolutionary guards in Tehran last month. When its demands for an explanation and apology went unanswered, Britain closed the Iranian consulate in Manchester on June 4 and ordered its five-man staff to leave the country. Iran responded two days later by expelling five British diplomats.
