Samuel Adams, a consultant on the CBS documentary that provoked a libel suit by retired Gen. William C. Westmoreland, filed a $75-million libel suit Tuesday against writer Renata Adler in Alexandria, Va. Adams, a former CIA intelligence analyst who was a defendant in Westmoreland’s suit, charges that he was defamed by two articles she wrote for the New Yorker magazine. The pieces, later published in a book entitled “Reckless Disregard,” criticized CBS’defense against Westmoreland’s suit. Adams claims the articles accused him of encouraging other CBS witnesses to lie at the trial. A spokeswoman for the New Yorker and Adler said they had not seen the complaint and would not comment.
