Thirty foreigners diagnosed as having AIDS have been deported from the Soviet Union, the Tass news agency said. It quoted Alexander Pokrovsky, director of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology, as saying that six more foreigners who received treatment are to be deported and that three foreigners have died from acquired immune deficiency syndrome in the last two years--the first AIDS deaths reported by the Soviets. “Seven AIDS patients are in the hospital at present,” Pokrovsky said. “One is a Soviet national, the rest are foreigners.” The Soviets are launching a major AIDS information and prevention campaign, he said.
