About 650 newsroom, clerical and maintenance workers went on strike against the Baltimore Sun newspapers after contract talks stalled. The Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Local 35 had extended a Tuesday strike deadline to allow further negotiations. Union members met for two hours before voting to strike the 150-year-old morning and evening papers, which have a combined circulation of about 417,000. Management said the morning edition would be published today. The Guild was unhappy with proposed annual salary increases of 1% to 2% made by the Sunpapers, which were recently purchased by the Times Mirror Co. The Guild had sought 8% annual wage increases.
