Chub Feeney New President of the Padres

PHILADELPHIA — Retired National League President Charles (Chub) Feeney was named president of the San Diego Padres at a National League owners’ meeting here Wednesday and said he plans no immediate personnel changes.
“As far as I am concerned, everyone is there and I have no plans to make any changes,” Feeney said of the Padres, whose record is 15-45, the worst in the major leagues.
Owner Joan Kroc praised Feeney as the experienced baseball administrator she wanted to replace son-in-law Ballard Smith, who announced last month he planned to devote his time to other business interests. Feeney will serve at least one year with the Padres.
Feeney, 65, served as president of the National League from 1970 until his retirement in 1986. Before that he had been vice president and general manager of the San Francisco Giants.
Feeney said he welcomed the chance to again be active in baseball. “It’s an opportunity to be helpful to the Padres and the National League,” he said.
