Two teams of Sikh gunmen struck in New Delhi on Saturday night, killing at least nine people and wounding 22 in the worst extremist attacks in the Indian capital in two years.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the two teams struck in four separate places in residential areas of south Delhi, leaving a bloody trail as they opened fire with machine guns and lobbed hand grenades at random.

Police officials said the entire city had been put on “red alert” and guards were stationed at all exits. Extra security patrols were manning railways and bus stations, the international airport and government installations.

Although the attackers have not been identified, the Press Trust said they were believed to be Sikh extremists.

Police said one group of gunmen attacked two homes, one where a wedding was being held and another hosting a birthday party, in a wealthy suburb about four miles southeast of the city’s center. That group later attacked shoppers in a nearby shopping complex, police said.

Meanwhile, according to police, a second team of extremists staged an attack in another suburb of the capital.
