UCLA celebrated its 68th commencement Sunday in Drake Stadium. Speakers were UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young, Alumni Assn. President Bea Mandel and Donna D. Ausby, bachelor of arts candidate in applied mathematics. About 5,000 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate degrees were awarded.

Honorary Awards:

Dr. Joon Lew, director of the Lew Institute for Special Skin Clinic and Leprosy Research and past president of Yeungnam University in Korea, University of California’s Elise and Walter A. Haas International Award.

Ella Fitzgerald, jazz singer and composer, UCLA Medal.

Richard Diebenkorn, abstract painter, UCLA Medal.

John W. Ryan, president of Indiana University, UCLA Medal.

Other Graduations:

Occidental College, in the Remsen Bird Hillside Theater. Honorary degrees were awarded to David Aaron, John McCosker and Ladd Thomas along with speakers Chloe Aaron, John Argue and Terry Gilliam. College President Richard C. Gilman conferred 385 degrees.

University of California, Riverside, celebrated its 32nd graduation on the south tower mall on campus. Former New York congresswoman Shirley Chisholm spoke on the importance of public education. Student Andrew O. Todd spoke on “A UCR Education-The Result of an Attitude.” Nearly 800 degrees were awarded.

UCLA School of Public Health, also Sunday in front of the UCLA Medical Center. Awarded were 212 master’s and 35 doctoral degrees. Ruth Roemer, president of the American Public Health Assn., spoke.
