11 Peasants Killed by Maoist Rebels in Peru, Police Say
Leftist guerrillas killed 11 peasants who they accused of collaborating with government forces that are mounting a counterinsurgency drive in the rugged mountains southeast of Lima, police reported Monday.
Police said the killing of the peasants Friday was the largest so far this year by Maoist guerrillas of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path).
Police said a band of 20 guerrillas ordered peasants traveling in small boats down the Apurimac River in Ayacucho province to come up on the banks, where they read a list of names of people they said were informers or members of the anti-guerrilla civil patrol organized by the government.
The guerrillas then stabbed the accused peasants to death, telling witnesses that “this is the way squealers to the miserable dogs must die,” police said.
