A man sitting in a parked car outside a crowded restaurant was fatally wounded Monday when he allegedly pointed a loaded .22-caliber revolver at a Hawthorne police officer, Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators reported.

The man, identified as Hugh Shelton Campbell, 25, died at Robert F. Kennedy Hospital in Hawthorne about 40 minutes after the lunch hour shooting in the parking lot behind a Sizzler restaurant at 12920 S. Hawthorne Blvd., investigators said.

Sgt. Robert Cooper, a 20-year veteran of the Hawthorne police force, reportedly was checking the car after seeing Campbell throw an empty whiskey bottle out the window. The sergeant told investigators that Campbell raised a pistol, ignored an order to drop it and pointed it at him.
