The Board of Directors of San Francisco’s Concordia Argonaut Club, a men’s club that formed in the 19th Century because other San Francisco clubs excluded Jews, has recommended that members vote to admit women, club sources say.

Ballots will be mailed to the 623 voting members within the next month, along with the board recommendation that members accept women. The Concordia Argonaut, with dues ranging from $125 to $250 monthly and a $4,000 initiation fee, is the first of San Francisco’s six men-only clubs to take such a step in the face of social and legal pressure.

The proposal would allow women to use the club’s three floors, but would limit access to a swimming pool, steam room and whirlpool. The club now admits widows of deceased members but with limited access.
