New York radio station WBAI’s late-night broadcast of the controversial Molly Bloom passage from James Joyce’s “Ulysses” on Tuesday night generated no complaints, station manager John Scagliotti said Wednesday. “We’ve gotten only compliments and money.” The listener-supported station queried the Federal Communications Commission in May about the broadcast, which contained words and phrases considered actionable under new FCC guidelines. Scagliotti said the FCC refused to give a ruling, “but they indicated very clearly that they wouldn’t take action if any complaints were filed.” The regulatory agency acknowledged in a letter to WBAI that it was aware that “Ulysses” was found not to be obscene in a 1933 court ruling.
