The foundations of Tibet’s ancient Potala Palace are cracking because of air raid shelters dug beneath it during Mao Tse-tung’s 1966-1976 Cultural Revolution, the official New China News Agency said Friday.

The Potala, perched on a hilltop overlooking the city of Lhasa, is Tibet’s best-known landmark and dates from the 7th Century.
