Sub Intrusion Seen Near Stockholm
The Swedish navy was alerted and precautions were taken after people reported sighting a submarine periscope in island-dotted waters near the capital, police said Saturday.
About 20 people, including police officers, noticed “something that looked like a periscope” and suspicious wave movements off the holiday town of Waxholm, east of the Swedish capital, Friday night.
The Swedish navy has reported a large number of foreign underwater intrusions in recent years, including 12 last summer, but has failed to catch a single culprit despite big air and sea searches.
Sweden has twice accused the Soviet Union of such intentional violations.
