Hunting Trips Help Bag Hollerin’ Prize
A policeman who learned to yell as a boy on deer hunting trips with his father and grandfather won the national hollerin’ contest Saturday.
Charles Batton, 35, of Louisburg, N.C., was chosen the best yeller in the competition, which draws participants from around the country.
“I feel real lucky to have won the first time I entered,” Batton said.
“He (Batton) put on quite a performance,” contest judge Hoover Adams said. “He told a little deer hunting story with his holler.”
Most of the hollerers use duck calls, dog calls, Tarzan calls or rapping sounds, officials said. The contest includes men’s and women’s competitions, with judges then choosing the best overall entrant.
Spivey’s Corner, population 49, began the hollerin’ contest in 1969.
