Many of the 700 inmates removed from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Mira Loma Detention Facility in Lancaster after a riot were returned to the facility from temporary quarters at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. A sheriff’s spokesman said 446 prisoners involved in the rock-throwing, mattress-burning brawl Thursday night at the low- and medium-security facility were bused back there, while another 254 prisoners still await reclassification--and possible transfer to a facility with tighter security. Of that group, about 30 inmates are suspected of being ringleaders in the riot. Deputy Van Mosley said the three-hour insurrection appeared to have been triggered by tension between black and Latino inmates and spread swiftly when prisoners began hurling rocks at deputies.
