The $14.2-billion supplementary budget is designed to expand Japan’s domestic demand and help correct its huge trade surpluses. Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone’s administration will submit the supplementary budget bill to an extraordinary session of the Diet (Parliament), expected to convene next month, the Finance Ministry reported. The supplementary budget is intended to help carry out measures envisaged in a $41.6-billion emergency economic package announced in May that is aimed at spurring domestic demand for imported goods. The United States has urged Japan to boost domestic demand for both foreign and Japanese goods.
