Researchers have developed a new test that could be the first practical way of confirming whether someone has experienced a severe allergic reaction and eliminating possible confusion with other ailments. Dr. Lawrence B. Schwartz of the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and his colleagues reported in the new England Journal of Medicine that elevated levels of an enzyme known as tryptase appear to indicate that a patient has experienced a severe allergic reaction.
