The World : Police Raid Sikh Temple
Indian police raided the Golden Temple of Amritsar, Sikhdom’s holiest shrine, and arrested 90 people on the eve of a rally called by Sikh militants marking the June, 1984, army assault on the complex. Police said the two-hour raid and search was authorized after officers received intelligence reports that weapons had been smuggled into the temple. It was the third time police had entered the temple complex since the 1984 assault on Sikh separatists who were using the shrine as a base for a violent campaign for an independent Sikh nation.
