A Navy Reserve lieutenant was held Thursday pending a hearing on whether to charge him with espionage for allegedly removing secret documents from a Lockheed installation, authorities said.

Alan Roger Volin, 41, of Chicago was suspected of removing “secret and confidential” documents from Lockheed Missile and Space Corp. in Sunnyvale.

“A pretrial hearing will determine probable cause for charging Volin with the crime,” Lt. Cmdr. George Farrar said. “He is currently charged with improper handling of material.”

A hearing date had not been set, Farrar said.

Volin, arrested June 9, allegedly took documents from the Lockheed plant where he worked for two years doing contract work for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

“He (Volin) will be charged under the Codes of Military Justice,” Farrar said. “He was returned to active duty on June 8 so that he could be charged under the military codes.”

Volin was living at Moffet Field Naval Air Station, where Naval Investigation Service agents said they found the documents. About 1,450 classified photographs and slides were discovered in his apartment, they said.

Volin was held in the Navy brig on Treasure Island pending outcome of his case, Farrar said.
