DOGGED CAMERMAN

Share

I should like to point out that it was not an anonymous “film crew” that shot the dramatic videotape of the vicious pit bull attack (Metro, June 23), but a solo cameraman, Don Menzel.

As is apparent in the video, Menzel, encumbered by a 35-pound camera on his shoulder, rather courageously charged the attacking animal to help rescue the animal control officer. While continuing to shoot, Menzel grabbed directly at the dog’s dangerous jaws, with only his bare hands.

While The Times has done a terrific job of covering the danger of vicious dogs, it is often the TV news cameramen and women and the print photographers who are taking the risks to get the pictures that illuminate these issues.
