A counterfeit hormone being sold on the black market to weightlifters and other athletes is contaminated and can cause infections and fever, the Food and Drug Administration warned.

The FDA said the bogus version of human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, made from human placenta, is used by athletes to counteract enlarged breasts that result from taking anabolic steroids, another hormone that quickly increases muscle mass.
