Katz Will Be Missed

Share

On June 17, San Marcos school board member Ira Katz, in front of 5,000 parents and students, gave his graduating son, Peter, a hug as Dr. Katz handed graduating seniors their diplomas. Katz, a space physicist and a member of the board for over nine years, handed out his last diploma as he recently moved out of the school district, thereby vacating his elected seat.

Even though he will no longer be sitting at the board meetings, his direction and leadership will be remembered for years ahead. Students, employees and residents of San Marcos need to give thanks to Ira for the many things accomplished during his tenure on the board.

Ira’s decisions were always based on what was in the best interests of the students. He demanded excellence from his district superintendents. His demand for an academic, articulated curriculum resulted in district programs that received national recognition. Ira recognized the importance of cooperative labor relations as San Marcos is a state leader in smooth, productive negotiations.
