Greece denied American charges that it has connections with terrorist groups and demanded that Washington withdraw the charges immediately. In Athens, government spokesman Yannis Roubatis called the American allegations “ridiculous, unacceptable, slanderous and suspicious.” The furor, he said, stems from U.S. Ambassador Robert Keeley’s telling Greek Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias on Thursday that the Greek government has ties with terrorist groups and is not doing enough to combat terrorism. “I declare that the Greek government remains immovable in its stand for combatting terrorism, which we consider a threat to the web of international relations,” Roubatis said.
