PCBC Makes Gold Nugget Awards : Two Home of Year Honors Won by Southland Firms

SAN FRANCISCO — The 24th annual “Best in the West” home-building and design competition was dominated once again by Southern California builders and architects who snared 19 grand awards, including two coveted “Home of the Year” prizes.

Co-sponsored by the Pacific Coast Builders Conference and SUN/COAST Architect/Builder magazine, the Gold Nugget Awards were presented during a multi-media show at the Moscone Convention Center to honor “outstanding achievements in architectural design and land-use planning for residential and commercial projects” in 14 western states.

Harlan Lee & Associates and the Anden Group, as builders; William Pauli & Associates, as architects, and the latter firm and the L. A. Group as land planners, won the Detached Home of the Year honor at its Calabasas Park development, with Westridge Plan 3--the Montecito--as the best single-family dwelling over 2,500 square feet.

“While many builders attempt to capture the traditional ambiance of a ‘Beverly Hills’ house, they often fail; this builder did not. The home has that luxurious elegance of the traditional ‘Beverly Hills’ home,” the judges said.

Best Condominium

At the same project, another Grand Award winner was the San Marino Plan 4, while merit honors were given to the Santa Barbara and Carmel homes.

Lowe Development Corp., as builder, and McLarand, Vasquez & Partners, as architects, garnered a Grand Award for The Terraces at the Vintage Club, Plan C, in Indian Wells, and the Attached Home of the Year trophy for the best condominium or attached unit home over 2,000 square feet.

Judges said the entry’s “creative design lines complemented the natural beauty of the Southern California desert.” The architects, McLarand, Vasquez & Partners, were big winners, sharing in three other Grand Awards and nine merit awards.

Best Commercial Project of the Year was the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Scottsdale, Ariz. Builder was the Hyatt Development Corp. with Hornberger, Worstell & Associates as architects.

Judges Honor Designs

The 12-judge panel also presented Grand Awards to two projects “for specific design innovations.”

The Grand Champions Tennis Stadium at Indian Wells, built by Grand Champion Resorts and designed by Corbin/Yamafuji & Partners, was cited “for good architectural design for a single-use subject . . . on a narrow site” and 1055 Lombard in San Francisco, built by Hood Miller Properties and designed by Hood Miller Associates, as “an excellent solution to a tight infill site.”

Best Custom Home and Grand Award winner was the Baldwin residence in Laguna Beach, built by builder Al Baldwin, with McLarand, Vasquez & Partners as architects.

A new Grand Award, for the Best Retirement Community, went to Leisure Village Ocean Hills, Oceanside, built by Leisure Technology, designed by Berkus Group Architects and land planning by John Ballew & Associates.

The Pacific Coast Builders Conference’s Gold Nugget awards, a highlight of the nation’s oldest and largest regional industry meeting and new product exhibition, attracted 724 entries in 36 categories. The California Building Industry Assn. sponsors the PCBC. Following are all the winners:
