Sjoberg Clears 7-10 in the High Jump
Olympic silver medalist Patrik Sjoberg of Sweden cleared 7 feet 10 inches in the high jump, the best outdoor mark of the year, in an international meet Saturday at Goteborg, Sweden.
Sjoberg, 22, failed in three tries at a world-record height of 7-11. He missed his first two tries badly but came close on his third try.
The world record is 7-10 3/4, held by Igor Paklin of the Soviet Union.
In a meet at Prague, Czechoslovakia, Britain’s Steve Cram, the world record-holder in the mile, was upset in the 1,500 meters by Jose Luis Gonzalez of Spain. Gonzalez won the tactical race in a slow 3:45.49, followed by Cram in 3:45.54.
Other winners included Thomas Schoenlebe of East Germany, 44.96 seconds in the 400 meters; Robert Emmiyan of the Soviet Union, 27-6 in the long jump; Ulf Timmermann of East Germany, 72-2 1/2 in the shotput, and Marlies Gohr of East Germany, 10.95 in the women’s 100 meters.
