Share

The occupant of a home suffered second-degree burns on his hands in a garage fire that caused more than $40,000 damage early Sunday morning, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief Ron McMinimy said that Kenneth Acem, 36, suffered the burns while trying to remove a motorcycle from the burning garage in the 2800 block of Drake Avenue. Acem was treated at Costa Mesa Medical Center Hospital, McMinimy said. No one else was hurt in the blaze.

Acem told fire officials that he heard “an explosion” about 11:50 p.m. Saturday in the garage, which is attached to the single-family home. When Acem opened the garage door, he saw flames and tried to remove the motorcycle.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 12:20 a.m. Sunday, confining the damage to the garage and part of the attic of the house. McMinimy estimated structure damage to the garage and house at $38,000 and a $2,500 loss of property in the garage.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, McMinimy said.
