This very attractive project is unusual in two respects: It’s a big band date that was recorded live to digital, resulting in a bold, invigorating sound, and it’s a big band where synthesizers--played by Rob Mounsey, Richard Tee and others--replace the standard five reeds, offering scintillating tonal colors as the electronics weave in and out of sumptuously thick brass textures. Guest saxman Michael Brecker soars above “New York State of Mind,” Tee is warmly pensive on “Still Crazy After All These Years,” and “Jive Samba,” with its robust trombone-bass bottom lines, will funk your socks off. *** 1/2
