American health groups are striving to restore U.S. financial support for the World Health Organization, whose global activities are being threatened by a severe monetary squeeze. The WHO’s director general, Dr. Halfdan Mahler, said that the situation has led to staff cutbacks, freezing of important programs and “very serious demoralization” at the 166-country organization, one of the United Nations’ specialized agencies. Of $126 million in American aid pledged to WHO for 1986-87, it has received only $7 million. The rest has been either cut or delayed by Congress.
