Thunderstorms rumbled over Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, toppling trees two feet thick and knocking out power to thousands of people, while in the Rockies, a rare 18-inch snowfall closed much of the 20-mile road up to the 14,110-foot summit at Pike’s Peak, 20 miles west of an otherwise summery Colorado Springs, Colo. Showers and thunderstorms stretched across much of the Ohio Valley and parts of the Mississippi Valley and the plains. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 60 m.p.h. in Cleveland. Burlington, Ind., experienced a tree-toppling tornado, but no injuries were reported.
