JOFFREY TO UNVEIL LONG-LOST ‘SACRE’

Share

The Joffrey Ballet will open its fall season at the Music Center on Sept. 30, with a program that includes the premiere of a reconstruction of “Le Sacre du Printemps,” based on Vaslav Nijinsky’s long-lost, controversial 1913 production, with music by Stravinsky.

Dance historian Millicent Hodson and art historian Kenneth Archer covered three continents in researching the project, which was supervised by artistic director Robert Joffrey. Costumes and sets are by Nicolas Roerich. Also included on the opening-night program--devoted to works first produced by Sergei Diaghilev--are “Parade” and “L’Apres-midi d’un Faune.”

Two Los Angeles premieres are included in the engagement at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion: “L’Air d’Esprit,” a tribute to the celebrated dancer Olga Spessivtseva, choreographed by associate director Gerald Arpino, and “The Dream,” Sir Frederick Ashton’s interpretation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
