France accused Iran of placing its embassy in Tehran under a virtual “state of blockade” in retaliation for a French security cordon set up at the Iranian Embassy in Paris during an investigation of terrorism. A French Embassy source in Tehran, contacted by telephone, said about 30 people, including a 2-week-old baby, have been confined to the embassy since Tuesday evening. “No one can enter or leave, even the local personnel,” the Ministry of External Relations said in Paris. “We have protested very vigorously to the Iranian authorities over these unjustified measures that appear to be political reprisals.”
