The Kings signed Bryan Maxwell, a former National Hockey League defenseman, as an assistant coach Thursday. Maxwell, 31, was given a multiyear contract and will be responsible for the team’s defense.

In other moves, the Kings re-signed goaltender coach Phil Myre to a multiyear contract, and former King goaltender Darren Eliot, who had been offered a termination contract by the Kings, signed with the Detroit Red Wings.

Maxwell led the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League to the Memorial Cup this season--his first as head coach. He was an assistant in Medicine Hat for two seasons.

The Tigers are the perennial WHL defensive leaders. The Kings’ top draft choice, defenseman Wayne McBean, played in Medicine Hat last season, as did another King draft choice, goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick.

Maxwell retired from playing in 1983-84.
