No Further Cuts Seen for San Diego Schools

No further cuts in educational programs appear necessary for the San Diego Unified School District as a result of the final state budget signed Tuesday by Gov. George Deukmejian. But schools Supt. Thomas Payzant told the Board of Education that district officials do not yet know whether they can restore any programs eliminated in cuts this spring totaling $10 million in anticipation of Deukmejian’s funding proposal.

Payzant said he would report next week on money available for possible restorations to second-language, gifted, special education and other affected programs, or for use in providing salary increases to employees.
