Culver City School Board Votes to Assess Development Fees
The Culver City school board has voted to impose fees on new houses and new commercial development to raise more than $270,000 a year.
The district could assess builders up to $1.50 a square foot on new or remodeled residences and up to 25 cents a square foot on commercial development.
Over a four-year period, the developers fees are expected to raise an estimated $214,670 a year from new residential construction and $56,164 a year from commercial and industrial development.
The district is attempting to raise more than $8 million for schools neglected as a result of declining enrollments and proposition 13 cutbacks.
Board members agreed to wait until after their September meeting to announce guidelines for the fees, according to school Supt. C. I. Rethmeyer.
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board approved similar fees recently.
The Beverly Hills school district is also looking at the possibility of imposing the developers fees, a school board spokesman said.
