Michael Medved, president of the Pacific Jewish Center, 720 Rose Ave., Venice, has announced the appointment of Meyer Denn as its executive director. The appointment coincides with the 10th anniversary of the center’s founding.

Ronald L. Scheinman, of the Century City law firm of Scheinman and Bell, will be chairman of the 1987 “Adopt a Parent” campaign of the Guardians of the Jewish Homes for the Aging of Greater Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Municipal Court Judge Sherill D. Luke of Pacific Palisades is president-elect of the UCLA Alumni Assn. Luke is a trustee of the UCLA Foundation and chairman of the foundation’s nominating committee.

Bea Canterbury Lavery of Santa Monica, chief of protocol for the City of Los Angeles, has been named a 1986-87 Headliner of the Year by the national board of Women in Communications. Lavery headed a delegation of Los Angeles women to China last year. The award was presented by Joyce Combs Abrams of Culver City, outgoing president of the Los Angeles chapter of Women in Communications.

Rabbi Lee T. Bycel of Mar Vista has been named dean of the Los Angeles campus of Hebrew Union College.

Dr. Judy Carol Young of UCLA is the recipient of a $70,500 grant from the Leukemia Society of America. The grant will support Young’s research in UCLA’s Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology.

Seven UCLA scientists are among 311 who have been elected as fellows of the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science. Fellows are elected by their peers, based on distinguished scientific achievement. UCLA scientists named this year are Jackson Beatty, professor of psychology; Mary A.B. Brazier, professor emeritus of anatomy; Donald Buth, assistant professor of biology; the late A. Theodore Forrester, professor of physics; Glenn A. Langer, Castera Professor of Cardiology, professor of medicine and physiology, associate dean for research at UCLA School of Medicine and co-director of the UCLA Cardiovascular Research Laboratory; Donald Novin, professor of psychology, and Paul Satz, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences.

William S. Mortensen has been selected as 1987 Man of the Year by the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Venice. He and Katherine Lurie, the club’s 1987 Woman of the Year, will be guests of honor at a testimonial dinner-dance on Sept. 15 at the Marina Beach Hotel in Marina del Rey. Mortensen, chairman of First Federal Savings of California in Santa Monica, is active in many professional, civic and charitable organizations.

Two UCLA graduate students are the recipients of Women in Film Foundation grants. At ceremonies on the UCLA campus, Sallie Groo received the $1,000 Eleanor Perry Award for her script, “Daughter of Music.” Nietzchka Keene received the $1,000 Verna Fields Memorial Award to edit her thesis project, a film called “The Juniper Tree.”

Burton R. Clark, a professor at the UCLA Graduate School of Education, is principal investigator of a $340,000, three-year study funded by the Spencer Foundation as part of a cross-national comparison of how modern governmental support shapes the connection between research and training. The study will look at patterns that emerge within universities as academic researchers cope with the constraints set upon them by funding channels in the United States, the United Kingdom, West Germany, France and Japan.

Irma Colen has been elected president of the board of the Venice Family Clinic. Colen has been involved with the clinic for eight years and was the inspiration behind the clinic’s annual fund-raiser, the Venice Art Walk.

Ann Sagran, coordinator of the Santa Monica Public Library’s book review series, “Tuesdays With Books,” has been selected by the Women’s National Book Assn. as one of 70 recipients of the first WNBA Book Women Awards, honoring women in the publishing, book-selling and library worlds who have made significant contributions in bringing authors and their readers together.
