Republican presidential candidate Paul Laxalt, appearing at a Washington press conference to discuss the progress of his campaign, brushed aside most of the questions about his past associations with gambling figures, saying that “even in the Bible Belt, questions about Nevada are far down the list” of voters’ concerns. Laxalt said he still hopes he can put such questions behind him with the recent settlement of a libel case against the McClatchy newspapers of Sacramento, which he sued over a story that linked him to allegations of skimming of proceeds at a Carson City casino he once owned.
