A federal appeals court, citing the “value of openness,” ordered the judge overseeing the perjury trial of former White House aide Michael Deaver Wednesday to open jury selection to the public.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, acting on a challenge by several media organizations, reversed Judge Thomas Jackson’s decision to conduct the proceedings behind closed doors to protect the privacy of jurors. Proceedings in the case had been suspended today pending the appeals court decision.
